Providence Saint John’s Health Center received the Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Achievement Award from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. This award acknowledges the center’s unwavering commitment to providing optimal care, ensuring access to life-saving treatments for all stroke patients. By following nationally recognized guidelines and research-based approaches, Providence Saint John’s Health Center effectively treats stroke patients, resulting in saved lives and improved outcomes.

2023 Get With the Guidelines Award

Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death and a significant factor in disability in the United States. A stroke happens when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is obstructed by a clot or ruptures. Consequently, a portion of the brain is deprived of the necessary blood and oxygen, resulting in the death of brain cells. Detecting and treating strokes early is crucial for enhancing survival rates, reducing disability, and expediting recovery.

Get With The Guidelines utilizes the knowledge of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to assist hospitals across the country, guaranteeing that patient care aligns with the most up-to-date guidelines rooted in research and evidence. Get With The Guidelines – Stroke is an in-hospital program that enhances stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, reducing the long-term impact of a stroke and potentially preventing fatalities.

“Providence Saint John’s Health Center is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Jason Tarpley, MD, PhD, Director of Pacific Neuroscience Institute’s Stroke & Neurovascular Center. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in Los Angeles County can experience longer, healthier lives.”

Each year, participants qualify for the award by showing how their organization is dedicated to offering quality care for stroke patients. Alongside adhering to treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also educate patients to aid their health and recuperation at home.

“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Providence Saint John’s Health Center for their commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” said Steven Messe, MD, chairperson of the Stroke System of Care Advisory Group. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.”
