Pacific Pituitary Disorders Center

Overview

A Collaborative Approach to Care for the Pituitary Gland

Our team of pituitary disorders specialists treat all types of pituitary tumors and related conditions. We focus on getting it right the first time, leading to shorter hospital stays and better long-term outcomes. With our considerable experience, we also treat aggressive, atypical and recurrent pituitary adenomas and related tumors such as craniopharyngiomas and clival chordomas.

A Fresh Perspective on Pituitary Conditions & Hormonal Health

Pituitary tumors are complex in their diagnosis and treatment, requiring a team approach. At the Pituitary Disorders Center at Pacific Neuroscience Institute®, our model of care is based on published best practices that we helped define. As pioneers in this field, we have outlined the key elements of a Pituitary Center of Excellence, where patients receive coordinated care from a team of specialists in endocrinology, neurosurgery, neuro-ophthalmology, and ENT(head & neck – otolaryngology). Together, these experts:

  • Promote collaboration and best practices to improve patients with pituitary disorders outcomes and quality of life
  • Advance novel and more effective pituitary treatments through research and clinical trials
  • Support pituitary medicine education and training for healthcare providers and for patients

Leadership & Training in Pituitary Medicine

Many of our specialists are recognized leaders in the field of pituitary tumor care. They regularly teach advanced techniques and emerging treatments at national and international conferences and direct PNI’s neurosurgical fellowship training program.

Conditions & Treatments

Pituitary Conditions Treated by Our Specialists

Our multidisciplinary team is here to help you and your loved ones understand your condition and determine an optimal treatment plan. Because of the depth of our expertise, we often treat patients with challenging pituitary and skull base tumors, including those with recurrent or residual tumors (tumors that remain or return after treatment) and those previously considered “non-operative.”

Pituitary Adenomas

Other Tumors, Cysts & Conditions

Treatments & Procedures

Pituitary tumors can cause a wide variety of health problems including hormonal over- and under-production, visual loss and headaches. Because of their complex nature, patients with pituitary tumors and related hormonal disorders are best managed by experienced pituitary medicine specialists.

For patients who need surgical removal of a pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, Rathke’s cleft cyst or related tumor or cyst, our neurosurgeons and ENT (head & neck – otolaryngology) surgeons perform endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery, a minimally invasive technique using the nasal passages to access tumors.

Our endocrinologists have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating pituitary hormonal deficiencies and providing medical therapies for hormonally active pituitary adenomas.

For patients with aggressive or recurrent pituitary adenomas, and related tumors such as clival chordomas and craniopharyngiomas, our neuro-oncology team provides advanced targeted tumor therapies, clinical trials, and tumor genomic profiling.

Our radiation oncologists have extensive experience treating residual or recurrent pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas and parasellar meningiomas with radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy, using an advanced EDGE machine.

Clinical Trials

Pituitary Disorders Clinical Trials

Clinical trials for pituitary tumors and related disorders may be available and can offer access to leading-edge therapies, including new medications, surgical techniques, or hormonal treatments. These studies help advance care and may be an option for patients with challenging or treatment-resistant conditions.

If you’re interested in learning more about a clinical trial for an aggressive pituitary tumor, speak with our providers to see if you are eligible for an ongoing clinical trial.
