Walking for Brain Tumor Awareness at PNI

PNI experts joined the brain tumor community for a special walk around Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on May 26th, 2022 .

Pacific Neuroscience Institute (PNI) concluded Brain Tumor Awareness Month 2022 with a special walk around Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Thursday, May 26th. The gathering was the last of many Go Gray in May events planned throughout the month of May to amplify and empower the voices of all members of the brain tumor community – brain tumor patients, caregivers, and their families.

Fighting Brain Tumors Together

The PNI family is committed to fighting brain tumors together. To kick off the Brain Tumor Awareness walk, PNI’s Director of Psycho-oncology, Shanthi Gowrinathan, MD, gave a warm welcome speech. At PNI, Dr. Gowrinathan is an expert cancer psychiatrist at the Pacific Brain Health Center. She provides specialized psychiatric support for coping with a diagnosis of cancer.

Attendees also had the opportunity to meet Garni Barkhoudarian, MD, an expert neurosurgeon who specializes in the removal of brain tumors and pituitary tumors. Dr. Barkhoudarian is the recipient of several outstanding recognitions, including the 2022 Los Angeles Magazine Top Doctor Award and the Southern California Super Doctor Award.

Representing the brain tumor community was Tatiana Sarkisian. Tatiana is a young brain tumor survivor who is lifting the voices of brain tumor patients through advocacy for brain tumor care. PNI is grateful to Tatiana for inspiring the first Brain Tumor Awareness event in 2021. Her courage, resistance, and strength are an inspiration to patients everywhere. Other speakers at the walk included Chief Nursing Officer Giancarlo Lyle-Edrosolo DNP, RN, CENP, NEA-BC, FAONL, and Chief Mission Integration Officer Paul Makarewicz.

The event was sponsored by Tower Imaging, Guardant Health, Providence Saint John’s Health Center, and Cancer Support Services. Music was provided by a local jazz quartet made up of Santa Monica High School alumni.
