Ashkan Mowla, MD, FAHA, FAAN, is neuro-interventional surgeon at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute® (PNI). He specializes in minimally invasive endovascular procedures to treat conditions and diseases of the brain and spine, including stroke, brain aneurysm, brain and spine arteriovenous malformation and fistula and carotid and intracranial disease.
He is triple board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases and also interventional neuroradiology. Prior to joining PNI, he was an assistant professor of neurological surgery at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Sothern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA for 5 years.
Dr. Mowla did his residency in neurology at the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute where he served as the chief resident in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in stroke and vascular neurology at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI. Upon completion of the fellowship, he was recruited as an assistant professor of neurology at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY where was actively involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows as well as residency and clerkship curriculum development. During his time in Buffalo, he received the medical school’s coveted Louis A. and Ruth Siegel award for excellence in teaching twice in 2014 and 2016.
In 2017, Dr. Mowla joined the prestigious Interventional Neuroradiology fellowship program at UCLA medical center, Los Angeles, CA where he completed a 2-year fellowship under Gary Duckwiler, MD.
He has participated in several clinical trials of drugs and technologies related to stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions and has lectured nationally and internationally on related topics. He has consistently been a reviewer for several journals in the field including Journal of Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases, Stroke, BMC Neurology, Annals of Vascular surgery, The Lancet, Journal of the Neurological Sciences and World Neurosurgery.
He is the author or co-author of over 120 book chapters and scientific articles published in world renowned peer-reviewed journals such as Lancet Neurology, Stroke, International Journal of stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases.
For his research, Dr. Mowla received numerous honors and awards including the AHA International Stroke Conference Junior Investigator Award, American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Resident Scholarship Award, American Society of Neuroimaging Trainee Award and also Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology Trainee Award.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry and a fellow member of the American Heart Association / American Stroke association as well as American Academy of Neurology.
