Precision Brain Health is a program that utilizes a formalized system to comprehensively address neurodegenerative disease. Based upon decades of rigorous research and work by Dale Bredesen, MD, a renowned neurologist and cognitive decline researcher, the ReCODE ProtocolTM has emerged as a viable attempt to prevent, arrest, and reverse symptoms of cognitive decline associated with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias, and mild cognitive impairment.

More than six million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease—the most common type of dementia—suffering progressing symptoms of memory loss, confusion, behavioral change, and the loss of body control. Unfortunately, hundreds of clinical trials to develop drugs to help combat cognitive decline have resulted in disappointment. A reason is that cognitive decline is a complex and chronic process that develops silently over many years and often decades.

Treatment requires a multimodal approach. At Precision Brain Health, expert providers can ‘prescribe’ lifestyle interventions such as exercise and nutrition recommendations, as well as other precision health interventions. So far, results from clinical trials, and evidence-based lifestyle practices suggest that with Dr. Bredesen’s vision and multipronged approach, we may begin to see substantial numbers of dementia patients achieve a slowing and, in some cases, even a sustained reversal of cognitive and memory decline.

Dr. Bredesen believes that Alzheimer’s disease is becoming optional. We are optimistic outcomes will continue to improve—we are seeing that people with cognitive decline can, and do, get better.

Precision Brain Health addresses at both clinical and lifestyle components.

Clinical Assessment

  • Complete cognitive testing (‘cognoscopy’) to assess cognitive health and risk factors.
  • Recommendations for diet and fitness beginning at age 40.
  • Targeted, individualized treatments of specific chronic infections, which often go undiagnosed.
  • Identification of cognition-compromising toxins, which are also often unrecognized.
  • Genetic analysis, phenomic (biochemical) analysis, long-term action plans and more.
  • Experts: Drs. David Merrill, Verna Porter, Dale Bredesen, Scott Kaiser, and nurse practitioner, Mihae Kim.

Brain Wellness & Lifestyle

  • Brain Wellness & Lifestyle experts provide active prevention recommendations including dual tasking for physical and cognitive training.
  • Ongoing brain health coaching focusing on the Vital 6:
Memory (brain training), sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management, and socialization.
  • Experts: Dr. Karen Miller and Brain Wellness & Lifestyle coaches.

Resources

Research

Herein we provide a set of articles and references that review the successful treatment of cognitive decline using the ReCODE protocol developed by Dr. Dale Bredesen with his teams and collaborators at the Buck Institute, UCLA, Apollo Health, and the Institute of Functional Medicine.

  • First reversals of cognitive decline (Sept 2014)
This report describes a novel, comprehensive, and personalized therapeutic program that is based on the underlying pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, and which involves multiple modalities designed to achieve metabolic enhancement for neurodegeneration (MEND).
  • Evidence of reversals in cognitive decline (June 2016)
This paper includes the first description of the reversal of cognitive decline in patients with early Alzheimer’s disease or its precursors, MCI (mild cognitive impairment) and SCI (subjective cognitive impairment).
  • Transcriptional Effects of ApoE4: Relevance to Alzheimer’s Disease (Sept 2017)
ApoE4 acts as a transcription factor and binds to the promoters of genes involved in a range of processes linked to aging and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. These findings point to novel therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease and aging, resulting in an extension of human healthspan, and a disease-free and functional period of life.
  • 100 cases of documented improvement in cognition (Oct 2018)
Report of 100 patients, treated by several different physicians, with documented improvement in cognition, in some cases with documentation of improvement in electrophysiology or imaging, as well. This additional report provides further support for a randomized, controlled clinical trial of the protocol and the overall approach.
  • Success in everyday practice (Sept 2021)
The ReCODE program is a multifactorial approach that identifies and targets the potential contributors to cognitive decline in each patient. It involves seven core strategies to increase resiliency and optimize brain function to prevent or delay AD symptoms in addition to the personalized targeting of potential contributors. While each of the strategies—nutrition, physical exercise, sleep, stress, brain stimulation, detoxification, and targeted supplementation—may support cognitive health to some extent, when practiced together, they create synergy.
  • Successful proof-of-concept trial (Aug 2022)
Twenty-five patients with dementia or mild cognitive impairment, with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores of 19 or higher, were evaluated for various biomarkers and other biochemical parameters associated with cognitive decline. Based on the cognitive improvements observed in this study, a larger, randomized, controlled trial of the precision medicine therapeutic approach is warranted.
  • Successful trial by Dr. Bredesen’s previous students (June 2023)
Multiple measures of cognitive function improved after six months of intervention. Results support the feasibility and impact of a multimodal, individualized treatment approach to OCI, warranting further research.

Books

  1. The End of Alzheimer’s (July 2017)
Taking insights gleaned from decades in the laboratory and his clinical work with patients, Dr. Bredesen has authored a groundbreaking guide to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s disease that fundamentally changes how we understand cognitive decline.
  2. The End of Alzheimer’s Program (Sept 2020)
In “The End of Alzheimer’s” Dale Bredesen laid out the science behind his revolutionary new program that is the first to both prevent and reverse symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Now he lays out the detailed program he uses with his own patients. Accessible and detailed, it can be tailored to anyone’s needs and will enhance cognitive ability at any age.
  3. The First Survivors of Alzheimer’s (Aug 2021)
No one knows a survivor of Alzheimer’s… until now. The Bredesen Protocol has lead to unprecedented outcomes in treatment. Hear the inspiring, almost unbelievable, stories of the first people recovering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
