Interventional Neuroradiology, Pacific Stroke & Aneurysm Center

Ambooj Tiwari, MD, MPH, is a neurointerventional surgeon who specializes in using minimally invasive endovascular techniques to treat vascular diseases of the brain and spine. He is a trained vascular neurologist with special interest in critical care and neuroradiology and is involved in medical management as well as development of new diagnostic and post-operative management protocols for neurovascular diseases. Both a clinician and epidemiologist-biostatistician he keenly uses the power of scientific evidence to further the field of neurovascular science.

As one of the Pacific Neuroscience Institute’s neuro-interventionalists serving Providence Southern California hospitals, Dr. Tiwari works closely with other neuro-interventionalists, stroke specialists, cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgeons, oncological neurosurgeons as well as neurocritical care specialists to offer multi-modal and multidisciplinary comprehensive care for patients with neurovascular diseases. Dr. Tiwari is the lead for the neuro-interventional program at the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center allowing him to care for an underserved area with a population of 1.5-2 million people who have poor access to advanced neurovascular care.

Dr. Tiwari’s expertise specifically deals with neurological-neurosurgical emergencies like strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages as well as intracranial hemorrhages. In addition, he specializes in elective treatment of vascular lesions in the brain and spine including arterial and venous stenoses, pre-operative therapy of intracranial or spinal tumors, cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations.

With his background as an epidemiologist-biostatistician, Dr. Tiwari’s research interests include using data science and machine learning applications to decipher hospital information systems at a deeper level to uncover new directions for difficult healthcare questions. He utilizes his clinical aptitude in the development of new therapeutic targets for diseases including intracranial atherosclerosis, venous sinus narrowing and subdural hematomas.

Dr. Tiwari trained at the highly ranked neurology program at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center serving Wayne county patients and providing extensive experience in treating disease of a socio-economically and ethnically diverse population. He was selected for the prestigious chief residency of the program in his final year of training. Thereafter he completed his vascular fellowship at the same program, and a multi-institutional Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology fellowship serving five medical systems in the county areas of Wayne, Oakland and Genesee serving a combined population of 4 million. He moved to Brooklyn, NY as an academic neurointerventional surgeon and vascular neurologist with the NYU School of Medicine specifically serving the NYU Langone Health-Brooklyn campus. He was instrumental in the hospital obtaining the comprehensive stroke center certification in 2015, the second in the entire city of New York and the first in the borough of Brooklyn. The center also became the busiest stroke thrombectomy center in the city during his tenure there. Due to this work, Dr. Tiwari was awarded the NY Senate award for healthcare service to the community.

An accomplished clinician and researcher, Dr. Tiwari has presented and published extensively nationally and internationally. He has been involved in various original research projects specifically in stroke therapeutics. During his academic tenure at Wayne State University and New York University, he was co-principal investigator at multiple national clinical trials including the earliest thrombectomy trials for emergent large vessel occlusion. He has been invited to talk at various forums including CME lectures, national conferences, podcasts and radio shows. His current work is focused on precision care of the stroke patient as well as novel therapeutics for neurovascular diseases.
