Tumor-killing virus nearly doubles survival time of brain cancer patients in a small trial

June 1, 2016: A virus-drug combo has shown to almost double the life expectancy of brain cancer patients in a small clinical trial. The virus, Toca 511, infiltrates cancer cells with broken defense systems. Inside the cells, Toca 511 inserts the genetic code for a foreign protein—the yeast enzyme cytosine deaminase (CD)— into the DNA. The cancer cell unwittingly produces the enzyme which acts as a drug detonator. In the second phase of treatment, an inactive form of a cancer drug called 5-FU, or 5-fluorouracil is administered. It can move through the brain safely in its inactive state. When it reaches the tumor cells it is activated by the CD enzyme and destroys the cancer cells.

PNI's Dr. Santosh Kesari is one of the investigators on this study which has been published in Science Translational Medicine.
