About Dr. William Buxton

William G. Buxton MD, FANA, FAANEM is board certified in Adult Neurology with Subspecialty Certification in Clinical Neurophysiology through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with additional certification in Electrodiagnostic Medicine through the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He serves as Director of Neuromuscular and Neurodiagnostic Medicine and of Fall Prevention at Pacific Neuroscience Institute and has been recognized as a fellow of both the American Neurologic Association and the American Academy of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Dr. William G. Buxton’s interests in neurosciences and neuromuscular medicine span nearly 30 years, beginning with research in muscle responses to strain and stress as an undergraduate at UCLA, where he graduated with a BS in Biochemistry and honors including Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Departmental Honors. At UCLA Medical School, he received the Richard Walter Award for outstanding performance in the neurology clerkship. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Neurology at UCLA and then a combined UCLA and Cedars-Sinai fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology.

Upon completing his training in 2002, Dr. Buxton was invited to join the UCLA faculty and was one of three founders of UCLA – Santa Monica Neurological Associates. From 2003 to 2018, he served as Medical Director of the Neurodiagnostics Lab at UCLA – Santa Monica Medical Center. From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Buxton served as quality officer at the UCLA Department of Neurology and in that role developed streamlined methods to optimize safety in outpatient settings, especially related to fall prevention among neurology outpatients. His interventions, which he has presented at multiple national and international meetings, have reduced falls and, through work with his PNI colleague, Dr. Verna Porter, have even trended toward fewer falls among individuals with dementia, a population in which fall prevention efforts had previously been viewed as impractical. These experiences have instilled a strong commitment to quality, evidence-based, compassionate care in neurology, especially in the outpatient setting.

Dr. Buxton also has interests in neuropathies, especially those secondary to autoimmune disorders and other systemic processes, as well as the clinical interfaces between neurology, rheumatology and orthopedics and has presented work on these and related subjects at international meetings and continuing education courses through UCLA School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. An active and experienced neuro-diagnostician, Dr. Buxton’s practice is well established in electromyography, evoked potentials, and now neuromuscular ultrasound, as well as in electroencephalography. He has been recognized by the Super Doctors, Los Angeles Magazine Top Doctors, and Marquis Who’s Who programs.

Along with his colleagues at Pacific Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Buxton is honored to care for patients with complex nerve and muscle disorders, exploring novel diagnostic and therapeutic options in autoimmune neuromuscular disorders and developing new means to optimize neuro-diagnostic testing through combinations of more traditional EMG/NCS testing and newer ultrasound techniques. He is especially enjoys working in PNI’s unique interdisciplinary team to identify and address fall risk among patients with the broad range of disorders treated at PNI.

Dr. Buxton continues teaching trainees at UCLA as a voluntary Health Sciences Associate Professor and is pleased to be back professionally in Santa Monica, the community he and his family are proud to call home and where he is an active participant in many community service programs.

What patients are saying:

5 stars

I am so impressed with the care Dr. Buxton gave me. I went in for a neurologic issue and one of the MRIs showed a spot on a kidney. He took the time to call the radiologist and seamlessly arranged the follow up imaging I needed to rule things out. I didn’t even have to go to another specialist. This type of holistic care is so hard to find. I’ve had 2 MRIs and an ultrasound under his care, and each time, he sends me a note to set my mind at ease within hours of the test– today he did it on a Saturday afternoon. He also is a non-alarmist and thoughtful in his approach. I know he thought about my visit after I left and added some testing to be thorough. He provides an unusually high level of service and care. I am a doctor snob and do extensive homework selecting any doctor. Dr. Buxton is on my A list.
